At the regular board meeting on Nov. 12, 2002 the school board unanimously approved the recommendation that the new elementary school in the Pheasant Ridge subdivision be named Mary E. Pennock K-8 School.

Mary E. 'Penny' Pennock helped generations of students with her work as a teacher at three different Brighton elementary schools. She worked for 14 years in the Brighton School District teaching at North, Northeast and Southeast Elementary Schools. She developed and also operated all libraries at elementary schools in the Brighton School district.

Pennock was involved in the community also. She was instrumental in the equipment drive for Brighton's first hospital. She helped start the Brighton Hospice and was a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program. She was named Brighton's "Citizen of the Year" in 1982
