Definition of Giftedness

"Gifted and talented children" are those persons between the ages of five and twenty-one whose abilities, talents, and potential for accomplishment are so exceptional or developmentally advanced that they require special provisions to meet their educational needs. - Colorado Department of Education

27J Vision Statement

Brighton School District 27J provides opportunities for gifted and talented sutdents to develop their personal potential. Each school provides enriched and varied opportunities for gifted and talented students to enable them to develop their specific abilities.

Brighton School District 27J recognizes that students may be identified as gifted and talented for exceptional behavior in any of the following areas:

  • * General or specific intellectual ability
  • * Specific academic ability
  • * Creative or productive thinking
  • * Leadership and human relations abilities
Goals

Goal 1: Programming - By Spring of 2008, all schools in the District will offer, at a minimum. Differentiated Instruction and Acceleration opportunities to identified Gifted students as demonstrated by teacher ability to implement these strategies.

Goal 2: Evaluation - By Spring of 2008, 80% of identified Gifted students in Language Arts, Mathematics, or Both, will score at the Advanced level on CSAP as evidenced by their Reading and Math scores.

Goal 3: Professional Development - By Spring of 2008, all staff will be aware of the Gifted Education Program in Brighton School District. Additionally, all those working with identified Gifted students will be able to implement Defferentiated Instruction strategies and provide Acceleration opportunities, as appropriate, to these students.
